ECOMED project
We have attended the third monitoring meeting of the ECOMED European project focused on improving aspects of training, design, execution and monitoring of soil and water bioengineering in the Mediterranean area.

Science of the Total Environment is an international journal for publication of original research on the total environment, which includes the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, lithosphere, and anthroposphere.

Recently an article has been published based on some works carried out in the URL Urban River Lab with the participation of Naturalea.
Naturalea is part of the European project ECOMED "Specialisation Process for the Ecoengineering Sector in the Mediterranean Environment"
Ecoengineering is a technical and scientific discipline that combines technology and biology, making use of plants and plant communities for protecting soil and infrastructures, and contribute to landscape development. It matches technical (protection and stabilisation), ecological (eco-systemic restoration), landscape (improve the landscape integration) and socioeconomic (more efficient and source of employment).

The aim of this project is to generate a sector-specific theoretical and practical syllabus essential for the specialization process of the Mediterranean Ecoengineering sector. Also, to jointly develop a long term interaction scheme among the stakeholders of the ecoengineering sector and to deliver a training courses programme technology enhanced in “Soil and Fluvial ecoengineering, Hazard Assessment and Techniques Selection in Mediterranean Environment”. This new syllabus will be generated during the implementation of the long term strategy of the proposal “Specialisation process for the ecoengineering sector in the Mediterranean environment (ECOMED)”

In this project, which will be carried out during 2017 and 2018, we have 14 partners: 5 universities, 1 research center, 1 technical institute and 7 specialized companies from 8 countries (Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Turkey and Macedonia):

HypoTRAIN: A training network for enhancing the understanding of complex physical, chemical and biological process interactions in hyporheic zones.

Naturalea is part of the European project Hypotrain (Marie Curie EU project), led by the IGB (Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries) in Berlin.

Naturalea is the only company involved, the rest are research centers and universities in Sweden, Germany, Britain and Switzerland.
Root system assessment of helophytes · Resistance and root growth capacity in vegetated fiber rolls
A good resistance of the vegetated rolls is verified from the extrapolation of data from wild media, in which speeds of 4.18 m/s were reached successfully.
The resistance of the works where vegetated rolls have been used depends more of the quality of the execution than of the natural impacts.
Helophyte impacts on the response of hyporheic invertebrate communities to inundation events in intermittent streams
The inundation experiments for this study were conducted at the Urban River Lab (URL) experimental research facility in the proximity of Montornés del Vallés, Barcelona. With the participation of Naturalea.
The Urban River Lab
The Urban River Lab (URL) is an outdoor laboratory located near Barcelona, with 18 channels and 12 flood lagoons designed for experimental practice and fed by treated water from the effluent of a sewage treatment plant.

An infrastructure addressed to the study of highly modified streams and rivers with the aim to develop innovative tools and strategies for a more efficient and sustainable management, and also focused on researching the efficacy of soil and water bioengineering techniques, the use of macrophytes in the restoration of ecosystems and the improvement of the properties of self-purification of water interfaces.

Naturalea is part of the management of the Urban River Lab.
